Oh! America! In God We Trust

Did you know that America will celebrate its 247th birthday on Tuesday, July 4, 2023, known as Independence Day? Throughout the 247-year history of this great country, how many of us were either born in the United States of America (USA) or immigrated to this country?

Moreover, have you ever dreamt of immigrating to the USA and becoming a citizen? If so, did your dream come true? And why has the USA become known as a melting pot over its 247-year history?

According to the United States Census Bureau, 247 years ago, in July 1776, an estimated 2.5 million people lived in the Thirteen British Colonies, later known as the Thirteen American Colonies.

As per the same Bureau, as of today U. S. population is estimated at 334,994,511. Furthermore, according to the U.S. Congressional Budget Office projections, the U.S. population increases from 336 million people in 2023 to 373 million people in 2053.

As we commemorate this Independence Day, it’s an opportune time to reflect on the footsteps of our Founding Fathers and the resilient spirit of the Pilgrims who sought freedom in the untamed wilderness. As we know that their patriotic dreams continue to shape our lives today!

Let’s take a moment to imagine the historic day in the late 18th century when the Thirteen American Colonies, came together during the Second Continental Congress. No doubt, it was a crucial gathering in support of the American Revolutionary War, which ultimately led to the establishment of America’s independence from the British Empire.

History reminds us that uniting the Thirteen Colonies was not an easy task. For instance, one of our Founding Fathers, Benjamin Franklins’ horrific viral political cartoon published in the Pennsylvania Gazette on May 9, 1754, illustrated what he called an “emblem” with a woodcut of a snake cut into eight segments, with the caption “Join or Die.

Each segment was labeled with the initials of one of the American Colonies or regions. New England started with New Hampshire as a head section or segment of a snake, followed by New York, New Jersey, Pennsylvania, Maryland, Virginia, North Carolina, and South Carolina being the tail, respectively.

Imagine, had it not for the Thirteen American Colonies’ unity, what would be the nature of this country and our lives in the 21st century?

The American Revolution was a watershed moment in human history, introducing a unique ideology and political science. It marked a revolt against perceived oppression and political incompetence, setting a precedent for future movements.

The United States of America was the first sovereign nation founded on the principles of Constitutionalism and Democracy, rooted in Enlightenment principles. The Enlightenment, often referred to as the ‘Age of Reason,’ was an intellectual and philosophical movement that emerged in Europe during the 17th and 18th centuries, preceded by the Scientific Revolution, and it emphasized doctrines such as individual liberty and religious tolerance.

The Scientific Revolution followed by the Age of Reason coupled with individual liberty and religious tolerance gave birth to the Constitutionalism and Democratic system in which the authority of the government is based on a fundamental body of laws. These laws define the roles, powers, and structures of different entities within the executive, legislature, and judiciary, while also safeguarding the basic rights of citizens.

During the Age of Reason, intellectuals believed that human affairs should be guided by reason and principles of liberty and equality, and they argued that all people are created equal and therefore political authority cannot be justified based on noble blood, a supposed privileged connection to God, and challenged the conventional views supporting the monarchies and aristocracies.

These intellectual thoughts and belief in the “Creator” of our Founding Fathers gave birth to the “Declaration of Independence,” which states that “We hold these truths to be self-evident, that all men are created equal, that they are endowed by their Creator with certain unalienable Rights, that among these are Life, Liberty and the pursuit of Happiness.”

In an imaginary sense, as shown on the cover page of this post that the “Creator” is in the center, Liberty at the top, Life, and Happiness at each corner of this triangle, if you will!

Moreover, with these intellectual thoughts and belief in the Creator, our Founding Fathers formed the Democratic system of government, which operates under a representative democratic form of government, guided by the Constitution. It is distinguished by elections involving multiple distinct political parties, the separation of powers across different branches of government, the rule of law in everyday life within an open society, a market economy with private property, and the equal protection of human rights, civil rights, civil liberties, and political freedoms for all individuals.

When we contemplate the intellectual brilliance of our Founding Fathers, it is truly awe-inspiring. The way they crafted the unique document known as the “Constitution of the United States” is a testament to their visionary thinking. Even after 247 years, this document continues to grant every citizen of the country the power to vote and elect their leaders.

The preamble of the Constitution serves as a clear and concise statement, understandable to every individual, outlining the responsibilities of being a citizen. It states:

We the People of the United States, in Order to form a more perfect Union, establish Justice, insure domestic Tranquility, provide for the common defence, promote the general Welfare, and secure the Blessings of Liberty to ourselves and our Posterity, do ordain and establish this Constitution for the United States of America.”

The power and significance of the Constitution, as envisioned by our Founding Fathers, remain awe-inspiring even today.

Furthermore, the Constitution of the United States of America is the supreme law of the land, where the federal government is divided into three branches: the Legislative, consisting of the Congress, the Executive, consisting of the president, and the Judicial, consisting of the Supreme Court.

In a triad system, the Constitution is in the center, the Supreme Court at the top, and Congress and the Executive at each corner of this close system, if you will.

If you assess and evaluate both the above-stated imaginary figure of the“ Declaration of Independence” statement of the Democratic system, in which the “Creator” is in the center, Liberty at the top, Life, and Happiness at each corner of a “Triangle,” and the “Constitution,” which is being at the center with the Supreme Court at the top, and Congress and the Executive at each corner of a “Triad” system of government, in my opinion, and belief, this system of government represents the “Trinity,” in the Holy Bible, which is God the Father, God the Son, and God the Holy Spirit.

If this is not the case, then why do we have the statement “In God We Trust” on the United States currency, such as coins and dollar notes?

If this is not the case, then why do we have the statement “In God is our trust” as our motto in the national anthem of the United States “The Star-Spangled Banner?”

If this is not the case, why then do we have the statement “America! America! God shed His grace on theein a patriotic American song?

If this is not the case, why then do we have a statement “Glory! Glory! Hallelujah! His truth is marching on,” a patriotic song known as the Battle Hymn of the Republic?

In the Democratic and Constitutional system of government, the concept of the “Creator,” often associated with God, holds a central position symbolizing values like Liberty, Life, and Happiness. Surrounding this central idea is the Constitution, which serves as the cornerstone and is encompassed by the branches of the Supreme Court, Executive, and Legislative. This structure promotes harmony within the Community, County, State, and Country. It can be argued that this alignment reflects the intended vision of our Founding Fathers for our nation.

In my opinion, the Democratic and Constitutional system of government is similar to the “Triple constraints,” a triangle concept describing the interrelationship between three key factors the Creator being at the center with Liberty, Life, and Happiness representing the main constraints, and followed by the Constitution being at the center with Supreme Court, Executive and Legislative Branches representing its main constraints suggesting that any change to one of these factors will have an impact on the others influencing either the success or failure of the system.

In light of our current “Constitutional and Democratic” system of government, are we experiencing the harmony envisioned by the Founding Fathers among all 50 states, including the District of Columbia? Or do we face the consequences of division, as depicted by Benjamin Franklin’s segmented rattlesnake cartoon?

History reminds us that our Founding Fathers in unison won the American Revolutionary War, providing us the freedom to live. As a result, whoever dreamt or fulfilled his or her vision to be a citizen of this great country is obligated to keep harmony in the Constitutional and Democratic systems of government in unison. Because freedom is not cheap, and we can’t take it for granted since “God shed His grace on America,” and “His truth is marching on” as we hold on to our motto “In God is our trust!”

America! This is our hope and belief, and let us keep it up!
