Does Heart Have Languages, If So, Which Is The Right One?

A few days ago, a sudden thought on “language of the heart” crossed my mind. As a result, on this Sunday, I decided to reflect on this thoughtful question and write a short blog on this topic.

I don’t know whether or not you came across with this question, but in my case, for the first time started thinking where the source of language is in our body? Meaning, does the language that we speak come either from our mind or heart or both parts of the body?

Furthermore, few additional following questions also crossed my mind as I thought about the source of language within our body:

  1. Are the mind and the brain the same thing?
  2. What is the function of the human mind? and
  3. Is brain related to mind?

Yes, in human the mouth plays a significant role in communication, but when we think about the origin of language within the human anatomy is in striking contrast to the mind. I’m sure we have heard a common phrase known as “speak his or her mind.” Or, “speak your mind.” Does this mean that the language is originating in our mind? If so, why we commonly express and say “speak from your heart”?

Today’s quick search on the internet about the “language,” “heart,” “mind,” and “brain” topics gave me the following number of search results on each word:

Topic Number of Searches Time (seconds)
Language Over 3.6 billion 0.58
Heart Over 3.5 billion 0.74
Mind Over 1.8 billion 0.66
Brain Over 7 million 0.71

In fact, I was surprised to see these results! As we can see that the word  “language” turned out to be the highly searched topic on the internet in less than a minute. Why are people searching for this word? I’m sure there may be a number of reasons for it! However, my search on this topic as I indicated, in the beginning, was related to the in-depth study of its “source.” Meaning, whether or not the language originates in our mind or heart? But I could not find the exact answer in my online search; therefore, I ended-up referring back to “the book,” which gave me a thought first time on this matter.

As we may know that the average person speaks approximately 125-150 words per minute (wpm). It is very interesting to note that daily how we express a word (verb) in spoken language (noun)? But when we think of its source, sometimes it is very difficult to understand where these words are first generated in our body? That is, either in heart or mind!

The book I referred to is the “Bible.”  As I was reading the Gospel of Matthew, Chapter 15 – says defilement comes from within- I was stuck at verse 16. No matter what translation or Version of the Bible that I referred but the meaning of defilement or to make unclean or impure is same. Peter asks for an explanation of this parable, and Jesus Christ says “Are you still so dull (Mat. 15:16 NIV)?” In other translation, it says “Are you also still without understanding (Mat. 15:16 NKJV)?”

Based on this Chapter (15), the language that we speak comes from the heart. In fact, the great Physician, Jesus Christ tells Peter, “Do you not yet understand that whatever enters the mouth goes into the stomach and is eliminated? But those things which proceed out of the mouth come from the heart, and they defile a man. For out of the heart proceed evil thoughts, murders, adulteries, fornication, thefts, false witness, blasphemies. These are things which defile a man, but to eat with unwashed hands does not defile a man (Mat. 15:17-20 NKJV).”

Related to this topic, how can we forget about the “untamable tongue,” Which James writes in his letter, “See how great a forest a little fire kindles! And the tongue is a fire, a world of iniquity. The tongue is so set among our members that it defiles the whole body, and sets on fire the course of nature; and it is set on fire by hell. For every kind of beast and bird, of reptile and creature of the sea, is tamed and has been tamed by mankind. But no man can tame the tongue. It is an unruly evil, full of deadly poison (James 3:5-8 NKJV).”

As we can see that the “heart” is the main source of our language. In fact, there are numbers of Bible verses from the book of Genesis through Revelation to support this statement. In conclusion, these 3 Bible verses will help us to understand our heart’s function other than just as transport of nutrients, oxygen, and hormones to cells throughout the body and removal of metabolic wastes.

  1. “The LORD your God will change your heart and the hearts of all your descendants, so that you will love him with all your heart and soul and so you may live (Deu. 30:6 NLT).”
  2. “This is the covenant I will make with the people of Israel after that time,” declares the LORD. “I will put my law in their minds and write it on their hearts. I will be their God, and they will be my people (Jer.31:33 NIV).”
  3. “My little children let us not love in word or in tongue, but in deed and in truth. And by this we know that we are of the truth, and shall assure our hearts before Him. For if our hearts condemns us, God is greater than our heart, and knows all things (1Jn. 3:18-20 NKJV).”

In my opinion, based on the word of God, all of us require a heart surgery.  In fact, when we refer other translation of the book of Deuteronomy, Chapter 30 and verse 6, it says “And the Lord your God will circumcise your heart and the heart of your descendants (NKJV).”

I hope the topic is thought provoking. If you have any comments or suggestion, please share it. Appreciated!
